Farmers seek storage for abundant corn crop
2005-10-19 From Who TV
MASON CITY, Iowa Another abundant corn crop is forcing some farmers to store their harvest on the ground.
Many farmers say their bins are full and temporary storage is at a premium.
The manager at Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Rudd, Bob Engels, says his business is working hard to get crops under cover.
Grain experts at Iowa State University say there's no storage for about 22 percent of this year's corn crop.
They say some of that can be attributed to an overflow last year that is still affecting farmers.
At the Osage Co-op Elevator, there's no other option but the ground.
The co-op has storage for just over three (m) million bushels but is already looking for more room.
Producers say the corn yield this year is more than 200 bushels an acre. The soybean yield is hitting 60 bushels an acre in some fields. |
