China is the world leader in production
of fruits and vegetables. It produces ten times the volume
of vegetables and twice the volume of fruit as the United
States.
China is currently under-represented in the international
fresh fruit and vegetable marketplace. Inadequate post
harvest handling and distribution systems have prevented
China from playing its proportionate role. As full WTO
participation unfolds, China is also in danger of losing
its profitable premium-product domestic segment to foreign
competition who routinely employ superior technology.
With attention to detail and the proper equipment, China
can establish its place as a market leader in export trade.

In
addition to deterioration in quality, the accompanying waste
is a major consideration in domestic distribution - statistics
indicate that deficiencies in temperature management and distribution
cause physical losses are as high as 30%, with economic losses
higher at about 50%. Most developed countries have reduced losses
in distribution to below 5%. |

It
estimated that reducing this waste from 30% to 5% would provide
sufficient food energy to feed 120 million people! |
